[Access] DDE in Access - bug in help

Thanks to Terry Kreft - we found how to workaround a problem in initiating DDE:
Access online help gives a following example:

Dim intChan1 As Integer, intChan2 As Integer
intChan1 = DDEInitiate("MSAccess", "System")

which give overflow error
The trick - is to change declaration from Integer to Long:

Dim intChan1 As Long, intChan2 As Long

[Access] XP Security Settings

A trick from Steve Seguis - if Access does not run correctly on a PC were user logged with non-administrative privileges:
Another way is to import the compatws.inf security template locally on the workstation. That usually does the trick as far as getting older apps to work in Windows XP.
1) Log in as an administrator
2) Open up a command prompt
3) go to C:\windows\security\templates
4) run secedit /configure /db compatws.db /cfg compatws.inf

Windows and Office marketplaces

Just some thoughts about both. First I placed Access Translator on Office MarketPlace. As soon as application was approved - I got a lot of hits from it. Then I placed Audit SQL on Windows MarketPlace. No hits. Then Shop Audio Player - also no hits. So either nobody looks at applications there, or applications downloaded directly from Windows Marketplace, but not a lot anyway.
Ok, now I will try to place AssistPoint into Office Marketplace. Will see...

[Alex] MVP Academy course - finished!

Yesterday night (or better to say today's morning) finalized my last assignment and project for MVP Academy course on ASP.NET
This was the first course I took, I am really impressed. Our instructor, Bill, made amazing videos. Unfortunately I did not take 2 courses before, but for sure I will take more if possible. Personally I would like to have it less speedy, and spend more time to discovering new VS and ASP.NET features, read some books.
ASP.NET mobile applications I found quite interesting, last days continuously thinking what kind of staff I can make... Outlook mobile I have on MS Exchange 2003, what else could require mobile access? If you have great idea - pls let me know.

[Fun] Perfect partner

Nice joke from my Canadian friend:

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.

2. An old friend who once saved your life.

3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car? (Think before you continue reading)

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first. Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again. The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: "I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams."
Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to "Think Outside of the Box."

...BUT.... who are we kidding??

The correct answer is to run the old lady over and put her out of her misery, have sex with the perfect partner on the hood of the car, then drive off with the old friend for a few beers.

[Alfa] Selespeed problem resolved

Got response from one guy who successful solved Selespeed problem, probably this will help you also...

Hi,
I am the owner of a 2001 147 Selespeed bought on March 2002 with 746 km. For me the problems with the selespeed started 4 (four) days after I had the car in my hands: during the night. The car stopped 2 mt before a level crossing and only the reverse gear was working!!!! The day after, I contacted immediately the dealer and the answer was: "we never had problems with selespeed before"...... I became a great friend of the dealer cause every 4-500 km I was there with always the same problem: the gear slip into neutral and no more possibility to have any gear!!!!! After 5 times in the garage of my "FRIEND" (with almost no results), I decided to look for the ALFA Inspector of my zone and to ask him to do something, also because the car was still in the warranty period. I spoke also with some engineers in Pomigliano d'Arco (where the 147 is developed and build) and after a while (3 weeks) I had my car back and since then nothing of wrong happen. The information that I had from the Alfa's engineers about the problems of the 2002 selespeed were:

1) The cable connecting the actuator driver to the hydraulic pump was defective and was substituted (The problem of the cable is caused by the material which the cable is build!!!)

2) The software of 2001 was upgraded to the release of 2003.

Now I'm fully satisfied of the selespeed, but it was really hard to contact the right people capable to solve the problems of the gear.

Regards
Daniele
